September is going to be a big month for Amtrak. New Acela service between New York and Washington is set to debut on Sept. 23. You may recall hearing that this new route will offer a direct connection between the two hubs. Passengers who book this route will be pampered with complimentary coffee, tea and light snacks. Passengers will also be able to purchase additional snacks and drinks using a new cashless cart.

Amtrak's new Acela route will link New York Penn Station (NYP) and Washington Union Station (WAS) directly. The route will only be offered once per day on weekdays for a start. However, decision makers at Amtrak have made it clear that there is big potential for this option to be expanded if it proves to be popular.

Amtrak is also making some big updates inside its sleeping train cars. In fact, an entirely new look is going to be introduced for Amtrak's long-distance trains. The introduction of the new look will mark the first time Amtrak has made an update of this nature in more than 25 years for its East Coast trains.

It has also been announced that Amtrak plans to refresh the look of the long-distance coach cars featured in Cardinal, Crescent and Silver Meteor trains. The list of changes that passengers traveling on East Coast trains will see in the months to come includes new curtains, new seat cushions and new LED reading lights. There is also some exciting news on the hygiene front. Amtrak has made the decision to replace carpets with walk-off mats that help to boost cleanliness.
