Mandarin Oriental says it is unclear how long the Hyde Park hotel in London will be closed following a fire on June 6. It is encouraging guests with upcoming reservations to find alternative accommodations. In a statement on its web site, the company confirmed that all guests and employees were safe and accounted for after the Wednesday afternoon fire that sent up thick clouds of black smoke that were visible for miles.
The Associated Press said 36 guests and 250 employees were evacuated.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but fire officials said it was thought to have spread from a part of the facade that supports vegetation and plants to several floors of the hotel before it was extinguished, the fire brigade said.
The BBC reports the hotel had just a week ago completed the most extensive renovation in the 115-year-old hotel's history.
